Panopto is UA's primary video hosting platform, integrated with D2L Brightspace. It provides automatic speech recognition (ASR) for captions, though human review is required for accuracy.

Enabling automatic captions

For new recordings

  1. Open Panopto and start a new recording or upload
  2. After upload completes, click on the video
  3. Go to Settings (gear icon)
  4. Select Captions
  5. Check "Enable automatic captions"
  6. Wait for processing (typically 1-2 hours depending on length)

For existing videos

  1. Navigate to your video in Panopto
  2. Click Edit
  3. Go to Captions tab
  4. Click "Import automatic captions"
  5. Select language (English)
  6. Wait for processing

Editing captions for accuracy

Important: ASR captions are typically 70-85% accurate. Human review and editing is required for compliance.

  1. Open your video in Panopto
  2. Click Edit
  3. Select the Captions tab on the left
  4. Click on any caption segment to edit

  1. Open video in Edit mode
  2. Go to Contents tab
  3. Position playhead at chapter start
  4. Click "Add a table of contents entry"
  5. Enter descriptive chapter title
  6. Repeat for each major section
